GrapheneOS, the nonprofit Android fork that sandboxed apps and hardened memory before it was fashionable, is widening its hardware support. In a Mastodon post, the project said the first Motorola devices will be available in 2027. The phones won't ship with GrapheneOS preinstalled, but Motorola will support them, which is a sentence that would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago.
The devices will be flagships with higher-end hardware than Google's, priced accordingly. That puts them above a lineup that isn't cheap to begin with: the Pixel 11 starts at $900, the Pro at $1,000, and the Pro XL at $1,300.
Why it's flagship-first, and why that's Qualcomm's decision
The project was blunt about why cheaper phones will take longer. "Lower end devices will take more time to meet our requirements since the updates and security features aren't as good," the post reads. "It's mostly due to how Qualcomm handles it. The latest Snapdragon flagships have the best security features. We'll also need Motorola to start paying them for longer updates below flagships."
Read that last sentence twice. A phone's eligibility for a privacy-focused OS depends partly on whether a manufacturer will pay a chipmaker for longer update support on midrange silicon. The security floor of the Android ecosystem is, in places, a commercial negotiation nobody outside the industry watches.
Pixel exclusivity was never a preference
GrapheneOS only supported Pixels because Pixels were the only phones that met its bar: proper hardware security modules, timely firmware updates, and bootloader support for relocking with custom keys. Every other Android OEM compromised somewhere. Ending that exclusivity means either the rest of the industry improved, or the project found a partner willing to build to spec. Ars Technica reported that the partnership had been rumoured for over a year before Motorola was named in March.
What it means for a buyer
If you want GrapheneOS today, the answer is still a Pixel, and it'll stay that way until 2027. If you were waiting for the Motorola option as a cheaper route in, it isn't one: flagship pricing puts the first wave above the Pixels they'll sit beside.
The interesting question is whether Motorola ships these phones with its own software stack alongside, or sells them as the privacy option outright. A mainstream OEM marketing a de-Googled phone would be a bigger story than the hardware. Neither company has said, and there's a long wait for anyone who wants to find out.
